We again thank all who participated, especially the homeowners, sponsors, advertisers, and volunteers. If you would like to participate by showing your home, being a sponsor or advertiser, volunteering -- or nominating a neighborhood, building, structure, or otherwise sharing relevant information and history regarding the Sacramento region's MCM art, architecture and design treasures -- please drop us a line at sacramentomodern (at) comcast (dot) net.

In the meantime, we invite interested and interesting people to join us. See our previous post about joining Sacramento Modern.

Join Sacramento Modern (Help)!

Sacramento Modern (SacMod) is looking for like-minded, hard-working mid-century modern and modern enthusiasts to carry out our mission to promote, preserve and protect modern art, architecture and design in the Sacramento region.

The home tour was the first of many events we'd like to plan that celebrate our area's modern heritage. We can't do this alone; we need your help. Here are some examples of what you can do:

1)  Join SacMod: be on our board of directors or be a member.

- If you are interested in being a board member, drop us a line and tell us a little about yourself: your interests, skill set, available time to commit. We encourage architects, designers, artists, event planners, volunteer coordinators, historians, organizers, accountants, cheery greeters, heavy lifters and go-getters.

- If you are interested in being a volunteer at a future event, drop us a line.

- If you cannot commit energy and time, consider joining as a member. We'll be offering memberships soon.

2) Nominate buildings, residences, structures, neighborhoods, architects, designers, builders, landscapes, and other local modern treasures that you believe should be featured in future events and/or highlighted by SacMod.

3) Share your knowledge. Let us know if you have any information to share regarding any local modern treasure (architecture, art, design, crafts, etc.) or any local artisan, designer, architect or craftsperson.

We look forward to hearing from you. Click here:    I'M IN!

Thank You!

Many thanks to all of the people who made the first Sacramento Mid-Century Modern Home Tour happen and to all who participated -- the turnout and interest exceeded our wildest expectations. We really appreciate it!

Special kudos to my co-coordinators Kris Lannin Liang and Dane Henas who went above and beyond the call of duty. Kris had the initial vision for this event and put together the skeletal framework upon which it was founded. She has incredible organizational skills and spent  countless hours collaborating and partnering with other local agencies,  groups, and individuals, promoting the event, managing submissions to the car show at the airport and at individual homes, organizing registration at the airport, managing ticket sales, marketing and advertising, and volunteer coordination. Dane spent countless hours doing all of the awesome and talented graphic design work: the logos for the home tour and Sacramento Modern, tickets,  postcards, poster, signage, various posterboards, image preparation for the cover of Inside the City and the fantastic guidebook layout. I maintained our blog, our presence on Twitter, identified and enlisted most of the homes and points of interest for the tour, conducted historical  research (logged over 85 hours just staring at microfilm), helped contact advertisers, collected and prepared images, wrote the content in the guidebook and prepared the historical display at the  airport. There were highs and lows, surprises and disappointments -- and lots of blood, sweat and tears.

A giant thank you to the wonderful homeowners (that includes us three!) for allowing people to see what it's like to live in a mid-century modern home --- and to the fabulous volunteers who gave their time and support to this event.

Finally, we want to thank the sponsors, advertisers, and those who gave in-kind donations. We appreciate your believing in us; your participation made this event possible.

We encourage submissions regarding buildings, residences, structures, neighborhoods, architects, designers, builders, landscapes, and other local modern treasures that you believe should be featured in future events. Stay tuned!

Another awesome So. Land Park Hills Eichler for Sale!

Fresh on the market with an Open House from 1 - 4pm Sunday, June 6, 2010 (MLS#10044638)! A four bedroom, two bath Jones & Emmons Eichler Home built in 1955 on South Land Park Drive.

This is the home from the family that had the wonderful original materials from their first Eichler Home in Sacramento, including the fantastic brochure I featured in my last post.

"This classic design features floor to ceiling windows, soaring open beam ceilings, block fireplace, mahogany walls & so much more; all untouched by the long term owners. You will be amazed by the spacious & tranquil park-like rear yard which overlooks a scenic nature area."

Occasionally I find out about Mid-Century modern homes in the Sacramento region that are either for rent or for sale. I am not an agent nor am I affiliated with one (though I sometimes hang out with the cool ones!) I am passing this information along as a public service to those who are interested and love MCM design and architecture as much as I do.

The Big Daddy of all Eichler Home brochures

I just about flipped my wig when friends and Eichler Home owners Michael and Clyde called to tell me they were given the original marketing and homeowner materials from an original Sacramento Eichler Home owners' family. Due to the family's kindness and generosity, we can share and enjoy this piece of history. To date, from all of my research over the last two years, I have yet to see this elsewhere.

The original family owned two Sacramento Eichler Homes! When a home across the street from them became available, they moved in. The materials I've scanned and posted were from their original purchase.

First up -- a 66 page brochure which appears to have been developed for the Bay Area. It describes at length the design principles behind the making of Eichler Homes, as well as the details regarding the building of the homes from the ground up. It also includes what goes on in the planning of an Eichler Home neighborhood, the specific materials used, the companies involved, and available services and resources.

What a gem! Many thanks again to Michael and Clyde for passing this on to me for sharing -- and to the Michaels family for preserving and giving the materials to Michael and Clyde.

Stay tuned for additional posts regarding the rest of the materials.

Day is done where people are looking for a cozy place to relax and recharge

Just heard from local designer and friend Curtis Popp that our bed/bath remodel (he designed the space and cabinetry, we added the stuff) is in Interni and Decor, a Korean design magazine. An article is posted for subscribers but a glimpse of it can be seen under the section "Theme" in the pull down menu. Our remodel is the first item. Trying to get our hands on a hard copy; in the meantime, a screen shot:

My brother, Nick, kindly went to work using an online translation tool --
"We also express out to be a means of warm family space, and residential design (2010.5)

Day is done where people are looking for a cozy place to relax and recharge is necessary for, and have come up with a warm feeling like home and for someone that I do possess the first goal and as a means to financial technology. However, as the house itself, with space to another important meaning of thi ..."
 Sounds good to me!

From my other blog for the home tour but amusing: Scopitones-a-go-go!

We won't tell you everything that we have in store for you at the Sacramento Mid-Century Modern Home Tour -- but we'll share this little tidbit. Among the many treats will be a showing of Scopitone films at the Sacramento Executive Airport during tour registration.

Scopitones were a precursor to today's music videos -- a combination of a jukebox plus a screen upon which 16mm films were projected for viewing. Courtesy of Scott Moon we will be showing some films that were played on Scopitones back in the 60s.

Groovy, Baby!

More Zombie Hut!

Aloha! It's been a rough week so I'm going to imagine that I'm having some grog at the Zombie Hut. I've posted about this restaurant/lounge before here.

Enjoy this ad from 1968. Somebody needs to put it back, preferably within stumbling distance of our neighborhood.
